Hello,

I tried to dl and install the "ati-driver-installer-9.2-x86.x86_64.run" (from http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx?type=2.7&product=2.7.4.3.3.3.1&lang=English) for my graphic card, but of course, I failed even with the instructions. And I couldn't find any useful topic on the forum. So could someone explain me how to install it on my acer aspire 5102, with Wolvix 2.0.0. Ho, by the way, great OS, even if linux still hates me (I just missed crack-attack, so I made it a priority to install it).

Thank you

Can you try and be a bit more specific? What are the instructions. Does it need the kernel source. Do you get any error messages.

I have zero experience with ATi drives on Linux, so I need something to go on.

Oups, sorry...so first of all, I tried the automatic installation without success. Then, with that file
https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/linux_cat92-inst.pdf
I roughly tried to make a package. I know I was over-estimating my abilities. Here is what it done:

root@wolvix ati $ sh ./ati-driver-installer-9.2-x86.x86_64.run
Created directory fglrx-install.HGNN8g
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing ATI Proprietary Linux Driver-8.582...
==================================================
 ATI Technologies Linux Driver Installer/Packager
==================================================
ln: creating symbolic link `x700': Operation not permitted
ln: creating symbolic link `x700_64a': Operation not permitted
Detected configuration:
Architecture: i686 (32-bit)
X Server: X.Org 7.1 7.2 7.3
ln: creating symbolic link `install/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri/fglrx_dri.so': Operation not permitted
find: install/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri/*: No such file or directory

then I can't enter a new command so I have to quite the installer and the temporary file is removed.

Sorry if I'm not specific enough...and thank you so much for your time

Thanks for the additional info. I'll do some research into the Ati drives once I get some free time. Right now I have other things I need to work on in Wolvix, so if someone with an ATi card could step up and give a hand here it would be great. And if someone has an old, but working Radeon card they could part with, perhaps they could send it to me, so I can get some hands on time with an ATI card in order to support it better.

Saavik is coming here tomorrow to build the same driver for the same card for her Aspire. If nobody gets you on your way by then we will help.

Ok Here is what we did. It worked for us maybe it will work for you  Grin
We did this on a clean install of 2.0 Beta 1. You may have other issues not found by us.

Please make sure you have fresh kernel headers.  Terminal: "slapt-get --update && slapt-get --install kernel-source"

Next we surf over to ATI and get the driver file @
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx?type=2.7&product=2.7.4.3.3.3.1&lang=English
The driver file is named something like this :"ati-driver-installer-9.2-x86.x86_64.run"

While downloading make a working directory
mkdir /work

Save a copy of the driver file to the new /work directory

Logout

Login as "root"

Terminal over to the new work space
cd /work

NOTE: THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO INSTALL THIS DRIVER! We will call them "Automatic" and "Custom"

For an Automatic driver installation do:

run the driver installer
sh ./ati-driver-installer-9.2-x86.x86_64.run

When the Setup window pops up with the Tux on choose the first option "Install..."

Agree if your moral compass allows....

Choose "Automatic"

Choose "Exit"

REBOOT NOW!

Terminal over to /usr/X11R6/bin/
cd /usr/X11R6/bin

run your initial setup
aticonfig --initial

get something like ....
Found fglrx primary device section
Using /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Saved back-up to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.fglrx-0

REBOOT NOW

Surf over here:
http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/S65/162145
.. and blow up a mountain...

x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x

For the Custom installation do:

(from  /root/work )
terminal the install command for the Slackware driver package creator:
sh ./ati-driver-installer-9.2-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Slackware/All

This takes awhile and goes in bursts so BE PATIENT and wait till it gives you something like:
"ok I'm done install the package and run configure"
NOTE: Neither of us remembers exactly what it said but it was clearly done with two "-------" lines at top and bottom of the message.

Now in your /work directory you will find two Slackpaks to install. Do the terminal install in this order:
installpkg fglrx-module-8.582-x86-1_kernel_2.6.27.9.tgz
installpkg fglrx-x710-8.582-x86-1.tgz

Now terminal:
aticonfig --initial

Surf over to:
http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/S65/162145
and blow up some mountains. [Arrow keys and Spacebar...]

NOTES:
You MUST work in "root"

IF you fail or have any issues you must uinstall before you will get any joy:
as "root"
cd /usr/share/ati/
then:
./fglrx-uninstall.sh

If you terminal "aticonfig" you will get the configuration strings you might want to use and the overdrive tests to test your 3D and temp etc.

No penguins were harmed during the building of this driver but it still feels a little MS-eeee.

ok, everything done...mmm...how do I check if the installation is done properly? Cause I don't see much difference. And I can't change the screen resolution with the Xfce 4 settings manager.

Do you need the kernel headers (source) to install this driver? If so try installing the recently updated kernel-source package. The old package was broken.
Code:
slapt-get --update && slapt-get --install kernel-source

Hey Piniouf.
Well first if it didn't work you would have problems. That's why the first reboot. If it didn't work you would have errors.
I happened to have the kernel config for Beta 1 open on my machine so I could check the kernel reqs against the ATI install pdf and everything was right, but I personally can't "see" any difference on the studio machine.
Saavik says there is a big difference on hers but honestly I could not "see" any difference on hers either.
When she comes around I will ask her or if she reads this maybe she will explain it.
My guess is that you would get better access to the video card resources so maybe speed of render and CPU load?Huh Smoother video while multi-tasking maybe???

How recent is recent?

How recent is recent?

Recent as in yesterday (2009-03-18) I rebuilt the kernel-source package as I had a user on IRC who could not compile the Radeon driver, due to missing kernel headers in the previous kernel-source package.

OK I will wait for Saavik to come round and we will do a clean install and build the drivers again and see if it makes any difference.
I will NOTE the above.

UPDATE:
Saavik and I did two clean installs of Beta 1 and ran the automatic ATI driver build with the updated headers. She showed me on her Aspire that it is better to look at. The video is smoother and the motion graphics tighter and clearer. Just not a whole lot IMO. She has Dreamlinux on her other partition and it actually gained two ATI configuration icons in it's menu with the 9.2 driver install.
There is a manual build instruction specific to Slackware with "X", "Module" and "All" options for the ATI 9.2 driver . I will do a clean install of Beta 1 and build it Friday.

I have to say I saw no difference on the studio machine. I ran the overdrive 3D test and it passed but really it looked no better.

UPDATE UPDATE:
We did four more clean installs of this driver with clean installs of Beta 1. Two the "Custom" way and two "Automatic". We did the last two right off the instructions above and edited the instructions to accurate efficacy. If you find any error please let us know and we can clear it up.

Ok, I followed Yoyote instructions for an automatic installation (and updated the kernel-source package), I'll try with some 3D applications to see if everything is fine, feed you up later...

Anyway, thanks to everybody for the help

update: result for supertuxkart = incredibly slow and sluggish...maybe a wrong configuration? And I still can't change the screen resolution from the xfce setting manager
