Since I am not able to make topics in the Development Releases board, I found it could as well be put here.

Ok, so I have now been using the build23 release for almost a whole month. I'm totally in love.

Once I got the build23 installed into an improved and cleaned-up file system, I was met with a few surprises. One: No GUI login. Two: Once I got into GUI, I got to experience Wolven's problems with the Mime database. Thunar had no idea how to open Jpeg pictures, or text files. Good thing I did know.

But after some fiddling around, and telling Thunar to use this and that, it eventually worked out. Now, I have GDM set up at boot, using the new and nice Wolvix theme that was included with the build23 installation. That's great, Wolven!

More minor fiddling, and I have htop, transparency in Xfwm4, Opera and Wine. No big surprises there. Kudos to Wolven for including Rawstudio as well, which I have grown to like. It is now my standard RAW-photo processing software, after I failed at compiling RawTherapee. Maybe I'll try again with build23 -- last time was with 1.1.0.

All in all, there's been surprisingly few glitches, bugs and fails in build23, seeing as how it's supposed to be "pre-alpha". This could've been a beta release. The biggest drawback was that some apps that were included in 1.1.0 currently are left out, though most are to be found in the 2.0.0 repo, which I by the way also managed to dig up, even though it wasn't included in the slapt-get/Gslapt configuration. Htop is one example of such lost software. I used htop a lot, it's more user-friendly than top.

As one last note, Xfce is now built with i18n support, at last, so if you use the GDM configuration tools, you can now choose your own language, and most surely get the Xfce menus, and lots of GTK text and menus, in that language, since the Gnome configuration is also read by Xfce. To me, that means Norwegian Xfce menus, partly Norwegian text in Thunar, and Norwegian text and menus in lots of GTK apps, like Rawstudio and Gimp.

Thank you a lot, Wolven and Oithona. I recon the Wolvix 2.0.0 will be a blast once it is released. If Distrowatch does not reflect that blast, then well, who cares of Distrowatch anyways? This is going to be the biggest thing happened to Wolvix since.. Oithona joined the team? At least it's big.

Development Releases is a news board - it's more appropriate here ! thought (even thugh it's not a release candidate or beta).

No GUI login - bacause of problems wolven was having with GDM - seems you've cured this so kudos to you Smiley
(I always use the command line login anyways).

I think this was never intended to be complete so lots of packages not there yet that will be.
I think, with an updated kernel this should be a release too Smiley

Speaking of candidate packages, my vote goes to filezilla in preference to gftp.

Thanks for the feedback on build23. The mime database issue is the biggest problem, to me it's a show stopper bug. If it wasn't for that and the GDM issue which I couldn't solve I'd released build23 as the first alpha about two moths ago. (Development slowed down after that due to my new family situation, which is demanding more and more of my time)

@ Oithona: I tried getting the 2.6.27.8 kernel working live again last night, without luck. I tried recompiling with the kernel config form Slax, same issue. Then I tired the latest 2.6.27.8 kernel package from the Slax FTP server, same issue. So it was not my build script as I thought it was, the problem lies elsewhere. I'll try to figure out what the issue is once I get a few hours of free time.

so after few days of playing with build23:
- installation went without any trouble
- internet eth0 worked without configure anything
- I could load images from my camera which I could'nt manage to do with wolvix 1.0
- I could postcast to my ipod which I could'nt with wolvix 1.0
- I can finally edit subtitles with subtitle editor which I couldn't with wolvix 1.0
- I could play movies with mplayer and vlc without any problem
- I managed to install amule and make it work
- pidgin worked fine
- Thunderbird worked fine
- By usual, I had my problem with gdm which show very little fonts but I worked it up (by the way I had no problem with gui login)
- I tried to see what webkit is but couldn't get it work at all
- I managed to install and get work ede, icewm, fluxbox, fvwm2,  blackbox, openbox and windowmaker (just for fun)
- I had a problem with icewm with wolvix package it said a dependency was missing so got it from darkstar

- the main problem is when i shut down the computer, it get stuck with "shutting down pcmia services:cards" and I have to push the power button to turn the pc off

all in all great job! I'll stay with build 23 till the next release, I think also it could be beta release

a little suggestion: post in the forum whenever there is a new alpha or beta release!
