Hello aryr100

Yes there will be a new release, but when is a though question to answer. The truth is that I've not yet started working on the next release which I planned to base on Slackware 12.

Between the 1.1.0 release and my real job, I've been rather exhausted and burned out lately, but I've started to get back the urge to develop again. What I think I'll do now is release a 1.1.1 version still based on Slackware 11.0/Wolvix 1.1.0 before I start working on the next major release based on Slackware 12 (or newer) The 1.1.1 release will be a bug fix and minor upgrades release. How much of the 'old' code base I'll be upgrading I don't know yet.

I know a lot of people (me included) are anxious to see Wolvix using the new Slackware toolchain and the new modular Xorg, but as it is now I'm not up to a new 7 to 8 month development marathon. So the current plan is to update and refine the 1.1.0 release and then start working on the next major upgrade.

Your last comment was in September '07. Is there as of now any updates on the work or the plans, or have things been paused for a while? I'm just curious ^^

Will we be able to smoothly upgrade to the new version by just changing the repos and pointing to slackware 12.0 or 12.1 or slackware-current and the new wolvix repos or will we have to do fresh installations?

I guess you'll need to do a fresh install, but I hope and believe that we can keep our wolvixsave.xfs file.

I can tell you that there has been work on what seems to be Wolvix 2.0.0 or 1.5.0, whichever he decides. Wolven has built packages for more than 18 hours, so if there are recommendations or requests, they should be voiced quickly Smiley

The new Wolvix will be based off Slackware 12.1, as far as I remember. (And I don't remember well -- I don't even know if there's a Slack with that number). Wolven has also decided to advance a bit when it comes to disk sizes, seeing as how cheap USB pens are nowadays. Hence he will probably make Cub 512, and Hunter somewhere above. It should be noted that Wolven will this time make a new type of ISO as well -- in addition to live-CD's, you will now get a Wolvix Install CD, containing a modded version of Slackware 12.1's new installer.

Is that enough of a future kill for you to starve a little more? ^.^

Hey Marin.

A new version is in the cooker. I know that a new version or even a maintenance release is long over due, and that information from me on the subject has been scarce at best. While I don't yet know when the new version will be ready for alpha testing, I hope it's not too far off.

Here's the current plan:

The next version will get a version jump (again) most likely version 2.0.0. The reason for the jump is that I want to change a few things. The changes are: Nothing will be stripped out of the ISO (headers, docs, locale fiels, etc) and the packages needed to compile from source will be included. This will of course make the Wolvix ISO larger. I justify this with the fact that +1GB USB flash drives are now so cheap that most people will probably own or be able to acquire a USB flash drive larger than 512MB. While not everyone wants or needs to compile from source, it's been asked over and over what needs to be added to make this work. A stripped ISO should be easy for me to create, if a large number of users wants this.

The second change is that I'd very much like to provide an install only ISO much like Slackware, Zenwalk, etc. Which will be based on the Slackware installer. Oithona has aired the idea of creating a GUI installer which will replace or supplement the Slackware CLI installer, but I don't know how hard this will be to code a GUI installer, or how long it could take, and I'm not sure if Oithona knows this either. So for now it's just an idea. Live ISOs will also be created, but this will of course add to the work load, so I've asked Godane for some help creating the live version(s). Godane is working on his own Arch Linux live CD and has extensive knowledge about the live-scrips, more than I do.

Here's what is done, and what needs to be done:

I've compiled most of the packages which will make up the next release, which will be based on Slackware 12.1. I'm currently running this bastardized Slackware install on my desktop, and it's looking good, but I don't have a means of distributing it to you all yet. What I need to do is sort out the packages and categorize them, (mostly done) so that we, Oithona, Godane and I, can start working on the install and live ISOs. I need dive in to how the Slackware installer works, which doesn't look so complicated, but sorting out the 'tagfiles' (which packages are required and which are optional) could be a rather lengthy process. I've not gotten around to looking too much at this yet, as I've been rather busy with setting up this forum and the new website. This Friday, I'll be leaving and will be gone for little over a week, so I won't be able to work on this in that period either. But I'll see what I can manage before then, and of course when I come back.

Hope this gives you all a little hope for the future. Wolvix is not dead, so don't pick the bones just yet.
