After updating 2.0, I started experiencing very slow internet.  I do not have the problem in windows, only wolvix.  I'm not sure what steps to take to discover where the problem might be.  Please help.  Thanks.

I'm not sure what the problem might be either, but let's start with the NIC driver. What sort of network card do you have. Is it wired or wireless? What brand and model?

Is the network slow in Firefox only, or is it the same if you try downloading a file with wget?

I haven't tried another browser.  It is both downloading and internet surfing.  Sometimes it is quicker when I first start firefox.

Have you tried disabling IPv6? I've fallen victim to Realtek before as well, and on some systems it was because IPv6 was enabled. For whatever reason most websites don't support it yet and therefore don't run on it, however upon installation sometimes Realtek drivers hiccup and IPv6 gets enabled by default, therefore you have to wait forever for that to ping out and switch back to IPv4.

See if you can disable that, and give us the results.

I've noticed the Internet is not as slow when I log in as root.  It only gets slow after a few minutes.  When I log is as my user, it is slow from the beginning.

How do I disable IPv6?

okay, i got tired of the slow internet even after I made sure the IPv6 was disabled and just re-installed wolvix.  then i upgraded as posted in the new server update.  when i added my new user, i got a different look than the root look.  xfce with one panel at the bottom and no wolvix panel.  also missing is the system info in the bottom left corner.  i moved the panel to the top, but how do i add the missing elements?

also the re-install and update seemed to fix the slow internet.  thanks.

I'm finding it a bit hard to understand what's missing. Can you please post a screenshot if the instructions below fails.

One way to get the default looks is to copy the settings to your home dir again. When you set up a new user this should be done automagically, but it seems it failed for you.

The settings for Xfce is found in /etc/skel/.config/xfce4/ (Note the dot '.' on the .config dir. It's a hidden directory.) You also have a .config dir in your home directory, so what you can do is copy the xfce4 dir from /etc/skel/.config to the .config/ dir in your home. It's best to do this while not running Xfce, so log out, and type exit in SLiM (The login manager) and you should be in text mode. Log in as your user (in text mode) and do this:

cp -r /etc/skel/.config/xfce4/* /home/<username>/.config/xfce4/
replace <username> with your user.

Now type startx and Xfce should start again.

If you still find that you're missing the panel(s), you might have to launch it manually. (You just need to do this once)
Right click the desktop and go to: Applications --> Run Program... Then type in xfce4-panel and click Run. The panel should now launch. The next time you log in the panel should start as normal.

It stays open because SLiM the login manager is bugged. Replace it with GDM. Simply install it with:

slapt-get -i gdm

On the next boot GDM should be used over SLiM
