Sorry if this sounds a stupid question, but does Linux "age" in the same way that Windows does? Only, I've not seen any hints of a registry anywhere (granted, I haven't exactly looked), and the filesystem seems to be far more organised than the Windows one...

I think some people are calling this "system rot" and while linux does suffer from it a little bit it's not even in the same ballpark (or even town) as Windows.  I don't think linux has a registry but the closest equivalent is a bunch of text-files that get refreshed and updated during fairly normal use so it just doesn't get cluttered in the same way.

I'm not certain but i think this is about right?

No linux doesn't really rot like windows but what can eventually and unlikely to happen is that a distro looses steam dismembers and stops updating, luckily your left with source and enough tools to either pick it up where they left it or fix it yourself but certain projects may abandon support for you but this is a long process for a distro to be abandoned and is usually adopted (or eaten up) by another. But this is extremely unlikely and takes mass movements away from the distro. But in linux there is certainly no self destruction like in the windows registry.
