Hi there,
Have the Wolvix 2 cub beta - some observations so far. Ran in live mode for six days or so booted copy2ram on white box PC (Celeron D, 1G RAM, AOpen MX46-800N mobo with SiS chips). Also booted in RAM on ThinkPad T23 with 768M RAM. Was able to watch commercial DVDs. Wifi to open access point using Belkin PC Card with rt2561 OK on ThinkPad. Some issues I found:-
* Doesn't pick up existing swap partition on system - not a must have I suppose, but definitely a nice to have
* Could not get audacious to play an audio cd on either machine
* Unable to get any sound from an audio cd playing in Grip on desktop machine - sound chip SiS 7012. Was able to get sound on the ThinkPad in same scenario. The desktop box did provide sound when playing a DVD
* lxde and openbox don't seem to have any way to shutdown machine, only logout
* The openbox menus seem to be set up for some other system with a bunch of apps not present in wolvix
* No success whatsoever with USB installer. Install to stick appears good, boot no go. GRUB prompt and finito.  Tried 'slow' option also, same result. In my humble opinion GRUB is a pita for USB booting, the syslinux way seems more likely to just work in my experience. Had a real battle with sidux and GRUB for example, which was only resolved by inserting a stage 2 file from an older sidux version. However iirc Debris did work with GRUB first time.
- Hope some of this helps, overall my impression is favourable, but still needs work.
PS Burned a couple of iso images with GnomeBaker OK, tho' the interface is kind of weird, most of the info provided to the user is incorrect (remaining time etc). Oh yes, any chance of some equaliser presets in Audacious?

The Wolvix USB installer does not install or use GRUB - it installs syslinux - if you're seeing GRUB on your USB stick it can't have come from the WCP USB install.

OK, well I guess that is reassuring to know, ie you are doing the RIGHT THING (TM) re USB booting. Looks like I didn't format the stick hard enough. I had given up on ever getting sidux to boot into X and decided to try wolvix, but seems that devilish GRUB just wouldn't die. I did finally get Knoppix to install and boot on that particular stick after Zenwalk Live also didn't make it.  I'll try to get another stick and try again with wolvix.

Any thoughts on whether audacious should be able to cope with an audio cd?

What no icons ?

It seems slower than the last version (1G via esther). Especially with Firefox, have you considered
Opera?

Is there any way to change the mouse size ?

OK, I've got used to it now. I'm only using the fluxbox session which I like.
I'm just wondering what icon manager goes well with it.

Fonts were too big for me, once I reconfigured for mostly size 9 Sans with
Raleigh theme, then we're rockin.

Does not remember the following on reboot:
network up
launcher bar ON
conky placings

It would be nice to get the middle mouse scroll working by default.

I think I could get used this, time to dig out those retro docking apps..

When you install other window managers such as openbox or other desktops such as lxde, you are installing a generic package; i.e. the same package that is available at their respective websites. Therefore, if you want it to look and act like wolvix, you will need to customize it yourself.

If you cannot launch an "exit" menu from lxde, then you may be missing the file "lxde-logout." It's in my /usr/bin directory on my debian system. Not sure about slackware. Do a search to see if you have the file.

Audacious should be able to play cds - it did when I ran zenwalk.

I too had problems installing other system after deciding against zenwalk a few years back. IMO it had something to do with using the xfs (or whatever it's called) file system.

For equalizer presets in audacious I just import the necessary file from Winamp.

If your swap partition isn't getting picked up, perhaps it's just not needed. How much memory do you have installed?

For managing icons in fluxbox, you could use pcmanfm, rox, or idesk. Pcmanfm is probably the easiest, but has the least configurability. idesk is the reverse situation. Rox is somewhere in the middle.

For conky placement, try editing the file ~/.conkyrc

Can't yet find a way in lxde to disable move windows with contents,
i.e I would like to save resources and only move the window frame.
(It's okay with fluxbox.)

Do you have obconf installed? There might be some options in that app for controlling the behavior of the openbox windows.

Some unrelated comments on Cub.

This is probably a feature, rather than a bug, but is there some way to tell Wolvix to log into LXDE automatically?  It's (mildly) annoying to have to do it by hand on each log in.  I like fluxbox well enough, but I usually work in LXDE.

Speaking of which, sometimes when I log in, the panel menu is empty, absolutely nothing there, just a tiny two-or-three-pixel by two-or-three-pixel gray square, which makes it necessary to shut down the computer and start back up again.  I can't find any reason for this behavior, either, unless it's just that my laptop is really just a typewriter with delusions of grandeur (Gateway Solo Pro 9300, 500mHz p3, 288 MB RAM) and, if it gets distracted, it forgets to load the menu.  Fluxbox never does this, though.

Also, I had to reinstall, because my settings and changes in LXDE had suddenly disappeared and I couldn't get them back --- but I think it was my fault, as I was monkeying with hidden preference files while too tired one night.  Since the reinstall, everything's been fine.

edit the slim.xinitrc file:

edit the file slim.conf

THANKS!  That worked perfectly.

Next question:  Is there a way to lock my screen and require a password to get back?  If I leave it sit for a time, the screen goes blank, then powers down, but touching a key or the trackpad brings everything bad.  Usually not an issue, but when I'm in a cafe or something, I don't want to just leave all my data sitting out if nature calls.

I'm on a debian system right now so I can only give you that perspective: you would install the package xlock.
