The wallpaper changer in KDE can be set to change the wallpaper every 60 seconds essentially making it a slide show.
If it could be set to 15 seconds we could use it in the language preservation program.
I have been playing with scripts for Gqview but it is not as good. I have the one from
http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php/Simple+Wallpaper+Changer?content=41075
to think from but not enough experience to build it into XFCE.

It would take up extra RAM... But, mainly: Why would you need that? Stick to Windows for that.

That's interesting, what are you doing with language preservation?  I "googled" Linux wallpaper changers and the like and came up with some stuff but I'm sure you have already done that...

Aggressively uninterested in Windows.
KDE has the feature but it also has ALL of KDE I don't want.

I made a little tiny script that calls up a preloaded screensaver. It works ok. I will trade RAM elsewhere for it. It is very high priority.
The images are language flash cards.

Sorry Wolvrik I was in a hurry.
We are recording language and culture digitally and developing a Linux platform to integrate the tools.

I'm sure you've considered this but Open Office Impress can run a slideshow.  I don't know what the resource usage is but I'm guessing it's a lot.

Why not just write this in python? or in html?

You' be surprised how many programs are written in html.

essentially all you are doing is displaying a series of png's or gif's etc- Id assume the code would be very simple.  You could either set it for a timer or for next page with button. You already have a browser I assume?  And it can run locally  or via the web for auto updates etc.

edit:

Hey you know many browsers have plugins that do this automatically- firefox even has a 3d one.  example: http://www.instantfundas.com/2008/12/generate-slideshow-of-images-in-firefox.html  <<< may not be what you want but there are a lot of options for this kind of thing out there.

Here is another idea, GKrellM.  There is a plugin that can cycle your pictures at preset intervals.  I haven't tried it so I don't know how it works.

"Stefan Bender's plugin lets you periodically update your desktop background from an image database and can display a timer to next change".

Look under "Plugins".

Why not use feh? It can set the wallpaper and there is a setting that will allow feh to choose a random wall at startup. It won't change it during your session, but it will change it at the next logout/login. I haven't used feh in a while, but you should be able to find plenty of documentation around the web.
